Great Article. Well, it is a common issue, that X is always slower than Linux (in terms of server perf.) or Win (in terms of UI perf.). Geeks and tech-interested ppl already knew that, but the majority of mainstream-users don't know and propably don't care about. Sad!

That's why Apple always needs more and more CPU-Power: Just to waste it right after they got the faster Hardware. :-(((

MacLash, please speed up!

Excellent article.

I don't want to sound like a wisecracker, but as i repeatedly wrote in this forum, CPU power isn''t going to get you anywhere as far as OS X is concerned. That's computer science 101: If your architecture sucks, you can throw as much hardware at it as you possibly want, it will be no use.

I loved the part of the article where Apple blamed the results on the benchmarking tools. How pathetic can you get.

By the way: Does anybody notice the complete u-turn that the macheads are taking once again ? When OS9 was given the axe, the argument was that OS9 might have been the better (and easier) Desktop OS, but OS X was offering the "Power and reliability of UNIX, a server operating system". Now that it turns out that the "power" falls short of the competition and the "reliability" is always one prefnesia away from collapsing, the argument is "Well, at least it's okay for the desktop".

Ah, well.

As usual, it's all the fault of the biased media.

It never ceases to amaze me how reluctant the user base has been to see OS X as a bloated, overdesigned, half-assed beta.

I mean, people always paint me as this heretic greybeard who refuses to embrace the future... when actually I have used OS X almost every day since it came out. I haven't been a "holdout"... I adopted before almost everyone in my industry. The problem is, I think OS X sucks. And needs to be better. That's all.

I get painted as a whiner niner simply because I tell it like it is. That the legacy had a better, more usable, and more elegantly planned and executed interface. I maintain that OS X could learn a lot from the legacy. That ain't the same thing as wanting to turn the clock back.

This whole crusade, for me, has always been about wanting a better operating system. OS X has been getting better only by friggin' nanometers. Like watching a stalled progress bar or a beachball.

The problems with it, are largely philosophical. And therefore I've chosen to fight the battle by discussing Mac philosophy. I'd have to say, right now, the platform SUCKS philosophically. It's sold its soul to windows and Nextstep. The beating heart of the Macintosh, which would make it great, is muffled by all the superfluous garbage that actually takes away from the user experience, while trying to con us with eye candy.

You've heard me say this "less is more" thing a ka-jillion times. Good. Well get ready, 'cause I'm saying it again. Less IS More. It really is. It's time to stop choking the Mac interface with crap. The way out of this mess is for Apple to give the same WONDER-FRIGGIN'-FUL attention to minimal form and function that it does in its hardware division, to the appearance and function of the operating system.

I mean come on, even digikids are saying that brushed metal is "so over."... We all knew that Aqua was going to get dated the way old kaliedescope themes got tired, and then heaped with scorn. The only thing that LASTS visually, is simple, functional, classical elegance.

I don't know about you guys, but I cringe whenever I see the crystal sausage scrollbars. I mean I really hate them. Windows XP scrollbars look better to me.

And yet, why is it, that I used the Mac Platinum interface for YEARS and never made a peep about it? Listen, I didn't sit there and remark at how beautiful it was... I merely took it for granted. It didn't get in my way, it did its job, and that's what made it great.

All I do now, is goof on Aqua. I work with it from morning til night, and I'd have to say that my major relationship with it, is to LAUGH at how gay and kiddy and overmarketed it is, or to become frustrated with how poorly it communicates functionality to me the user.

We need a revolution. We need some clean, lean and mean Mac pro interface to come along and once and for all erase all the stupid happy horseshit of Aqua that is getting in the way of work and creativity.

The MacLash will happen when people wake up and understand that the stupid PHILOSOPHY of trying to attract gullible digikids with eye candy is what wrecked the Mac.
