Look at how this Level 4 “helper” is trying to blame the poor switcher when he complained about the fuzzy fonts in OS X:
____________________________________________________ “I recently bought a new 15 inch powerbook (I love it, apple rocks). I am switching from PC where I used primarily a IBM laptop for several years. Here are a few questions I hope someone here can help me with - thanks in advanced (...snip...) 3. My fonts/letters/words seems very soft and fuzzy on my powerbook compared to very crisp and sharp in windows, how do I make it the same in OS X? This soft, fuzzy looking letters on the MAC are killing me. As you can tell I am new to this. I would hate to think that windows has any advantage over the MAC. Thanks for all your replies.” ____________________________________________________ The response: ____________________________________________________ 3. I suspect the font display phenomenon you mention is because of the use of font smooting to improve the display of fonts. However, I haven't really noted any disturbing "fuzziness" on my Powerbook nor on my desktop's external LCD display. So, I don't know if there's actually something wrong with your display of fonts or if this is just you. There's a freeware utility called TinkerTool (versiontracker.com) that provides an option for turning font smoothing off for fonts smaller than a size you select. You could also try installing a Haxie called Silk to gain additional control over the font smoothing. Also, try different fonts. TinkerTool will let you change many of the system fonts used. Also, try using Apple fonts rather than a MicroSoft equivalent font, for example use Times instead of MS's Times New Roman. I've never liked the latter's display even though it's supposed to be the same font. ____________________________________________________ Freaking unbelievable!!!! LOL |

maxximo, thanks for posting it here, what a sad world izzit, it's killing me again.
It's hard to describe for me, but i always hear the same when asking apple-users (non x-critics i mean) about the fuzzy fonts. Always the same arguments and points you can do about the fonts (silk, disable aa, tinkercrap, make fonts bigger :-)), but the CORE of the problem will hardly be adressed or recognized. The casual apple-x-user will never admit, that os-x font technology is inferior compared to other OSes. Yesterday i visited a friend who got a cheap, tiny little barebone pc. SPEEDY! Gawd, i'm off. btw. -> "Also, try different fonts..." - What kind of crap-answer is that? TRY? Using the superadvanced OS-X i have to try out till something mediocre appears and i'm so fed up with the mess that i'll OK that? (wacko english...) Approx. 1% of "all" fonts work at least mediocre using tinkertool/silk, the rest is pure insanity (Blurred2theMax, Baseline too high, too low, etc). Beware: Don't tell them OS-X should offer this from the very beginning, your ears will start bleeding hearing their wack reasons for it. now, i'm really off... cu |

Some guy is having problems with his dial-up connection after upgrading to 10.3.5.
Response from another Level 4 “helper”: _______________________________________________ Hi, Roy. You wrote: "I've just installed the new Security Update. Is there any chance that it might have a beneficial effect?" I doubt it. Updates affect known bugs. Your Mac seems to require an exorcism. ;-) ________________________________________________ Roy gets back to him: _______________________________________________ “Your Mac seems to require an exorcism. ;-)” Ha-ha-ha! Smokey, old chap, I thought I was going doo-lally with this problem, but I've just looked at MaxFixit and I-am-not-alone! There seem to be many users reporting the same symptoms. It's certainly most exhilarating to find others in the same boat! I hope they've all reported it to Apple. MacFixit give a few workarounds which I'm going to try. _______________________________________________ Good to see this kind of reaction I guess... :-) |
