I went with Cougar. Cougars may not be as exotic as jaguars or as fancily dressed as Panthers (and I think it's clear by now that we're not talking about black panthers) but they are hardy, resilient and adaptable. Frankly, I'd rather they start naming these things after dogs instead of cats. Dogs are loyal, trustworthy, non-flakey, non-flighty, your best friend, manly, useful, hard working and like to drink beer. Cats are nice too but, like women, are unpredictable, fussy, and temperamental.
That this NeXT/DigiArtist crowd in charge at Apple is cat-centric is hardly surprising to me. It's all the rage these days to feminize everything – including men and operating systems. Show me some women who can curse as good as a man and some men who can actually act like men and I'll show you the makings of a real next-generation OS. We don't need stripes, we need balls. We don't need fru fru dress-up OS's that have the lingering odor of having sat all day in a salon, we need an operating system that smells of oil and gasoline as if it's been working hard all day in the shop.
When they stop giving these upgrades silly names then I'll truly know that they mean business.
