Brothers,
I have this file in my trash (see pic), that has that crazy name, last changed date is 1904, Size is Zero and can't be deleted, moved, renamed or whatever. Empty trash does nothing. Secure Empty trash "deletes" 7 (?!) files but when it's done the situation is completely unchanged.

What i tried:

Booting the System-CD, then check and repair HD.
Booting in single-user mode and then "fsck -f" -> nothing
Reparing Permissions
Looking for the file in terminal-mode. If i look in the trash-folder there is NOTHING inside.
Trying to move the file to any other place (e.g. Desktop) seems to work at first, but nothing is moved, the trash is empty for a second, then it's in the trash again.

Trying to rename the file and i get a Error -43 Message.

Err, err, anybody got a clever idea now?

smithz a quick google search came up with this hit.

Looks like it has something to do with Yahoo!

It probably can not be deleted as it is in use.

Try dragging it to your desktop and do a get info on it. It could be locked as well. See what the permissions are on it. Then try deleting it.

First things first, check to see if the file is LOCKED. Unlock it in Get Info if it is.

Dowload Cocktail, and use the utility under "Files" to delete locked or inaccessible item(s)

wow, it's getting insane.
i dragged the file into the terminal window to reveal the path.
It's located on my XP (Windows) Partition.

/Volumes/XP/.Trashes/501/␀␀␀␀␀␀␀.␀␀␀

I tried Cocktail but i got an error-message "Unable to process items - An invalid character has been found in the path"...

I'm now trying to delete the file using the terminal and the "rm" command. But i ran into problems, because the filename is "too long", and when i tried to delete the "501"-directory the rm command said the directory still contains files and therefore can't be deleted, SO WHAT. Argh, argh.

Is there any GUI-Tool that can handle all the invisible files of OS X and XP?
Ok, i searched and found "mucommander", but the file is still fucked. Can't delete it.

Next step is booting into XP and try to kill it using windows.

That looks like the problem that it is a windows file.

I have a Sandisk Flash drive that has some stupid windows files on it. I can not delete them what so ever. Not even a reformat will delete them.

The other question is how did it get into your Mac OS X Trash to begin with.

This is indeed totally strange. Anyway, i finally killed the file using Windows XP and some free filemanager (it's amazing what kind of free quality software is available for windows). First attempt to delete the file failed (the filename was only a square box char, LOL - filemanager was confused and refused killing it), but next step was deleting the .trashes-directory on the XP volume - it worked.

God, what a mess.

I hate that stuff too.

It could have been some sort of temp internet file. One that is usually created and deleted behind the scenes when ever you go on the net.

Glad to hear you can rest sound tonight.

I have no clue. Since it's coming from the XP Partition it should be some windows stuff.

Well, recently i also had shut-down problems with my Mac System, sometimes it would hang forever. I then forced shut-down by holding power-button.

When i tried to repair the disk, it said all seems to be OK. Repairing permissions repairs some and some stay broken/unrepaired.

In the terminal type:
sudo rm -R

that's: sudo[space]rm[space]-R[space] and note the uppercase R.

Then you drag the file into the terminal. Hit return. Enter an admin password. Hit return. Boom.

Thalo, thanks for the trick,
but YIAAARGGH!

i tried: sudo rm -R /Volumes/XP/.Trashes/501/␀␀␀␀␀␀␀.␀␀␀

result:
rm: /Volumes/XP/.Trashes/501/␀␀␀␀␀␀␀.␀␀␀: File name too long

---

Update: Problem solved again. I ran chkdsk (after booting into XP) and it recognized the problem with that file. Result: The crazy file is gone. I hope this time it's solved forever.
