Well I hope everyone purchased shares of Apple stock in February 2003. If I had chosen a different path in life I would be retired now.

A $45,000 investment in shares of Apple stock in February 2003 would be worth well over 1 million dollars. Granted $45,000 is a large investment but people have cars that approach that kind of money.

Can't fault Apple for making money. There's more to life than money, of course. But does anyone have a good stock tip!

Not sure who "us" is. Most of the people here, starting with thalo, do own X-Macs.

That's a good point, Markle, although the article is talking about Apple's stellar hardware sales figures. I certainly haven't bought anything from Apple (with the exception of the OS) in many years. My Mac is only slightly newer than your own. Both were bought in the prior century. Certainly neither you nor I can be said to be adding to Apple's sales figures over the OS X years. I've bought no computers or peripherals, no iPods or iPhones, no gear of any sort from Apple.

I think you are correct about thalo. He's has been adding to Apple's sales fairly regularly and probably is the person on the forum that has purchased the most gear from Apple both in dollar amounts and number of items.

The conclusion I take from Apple's success is that people want what they want and there's no use in calling them chimps because of that. But, of course, we are chimps of sorts. There's an evolutionary basis for saying that. And we often want what we want for chimp-like reasons. Do drop shadows, transparency, and a number of other over-rendered features of OS X add to its utility? No. I think thalo and others have shown over the years that they do not. But we "ooo ooo ooo" and "ahh ahh ahh" over such things because we are chimps, we have grand color vision, and we like lots of motion and stimulation. What else could explain the cell phone explosion? Many people like that constant social connection and stimulation. You could never sell cell phones to tigers or orangutans, for instance, because they are solitary creatures. And besides, they have no opposable thumb with which to do cover-flow. But we humans love them. Is Apple then to be blamed for marketing bananas and selling them by the bunches? No. I don't think so.

And yet almost every X-man that encounters me, accuses me of not wanting to enter the future, clinging to the past... like some greybeard luddite. Meanwhile, I adopted earlier than most of them, and have followed Apple like a good little soldier.

The only thing I won't do, is stuff like waste my money on a first release of something like the iPhone, which I don't really need anyway. Apple's track record with hardware shows me that it takes three generations for either the kinks to get worked out of something, or to have Apple abandon it. And the only things that stay in development, are the things that are able to capture people's imaginations to the point where they're willing to fund the development FOR Apple, by buying largely unrealized and unfinished products.

I'm on the cusp of making the switch to my first Intel Mac. I'm feeling kind of railroaded into it, but again, I'll do it because my business infrastructure is Mac, and I have to stay somewhat current. The alternative is to start completely over with PC hardware, which I don't really want to do. I have hopes that Apple can make things better, and remember some of what it was that made them great.

If I do buy a dual quad-core intel Mac, you know the week after I do, they'll come out with something better and even more "pro"... As much money as they make off of digitards, I think it's really pro users that are their bread and butter.

My earlier question remains...has anyone here (Brad/thalo) used an iPhone yet?

(I haven't followed the threads closely, I'm sorry)

Not yet, TMO. And I have no plans to. I'm just not a yapper when it comes to cell phone talk. For some people it seems that a cell phone is like giving them crack cocaine, but I just have no desire to chatter on about small nothings on a cell phone. That's not entertaining to me. I enjoy my quiet time. Although this may be hard for some to understand, it's equally hard for me to understand why anyone would want to fill up every waking moment with the cacophony of human conversation.

what he said.

I wouldn't mind trying one, messing with it, but at this point I really have no desire to own one. To me, it's still like somebody jumping up and down going "thalo, thalo, thalo, you have to try this... a combination blender and video camera! It's the best thing ever!" When I can't see why those two functionalities would ever be put together in the first place.

I could justify the purchase of a GAME console, like an Xbox or something, more than I could justify an iPhone. Unfortunately, except for the touch screen interface, it hasn't captured my imagination.

What HAS captured my imagination, as I've been telling people about in mod talk, are automobile GPS units. Now THOSE are cool. Useful. And they friggin' work. The only eye roller for those is that they'll often have a jpeg picture viewer (don't need it), or some other bullshit like a currency converter, calculator, etc. To me, that's just filling space. These babies are worth their weight in gold for what they DO on the road. That's way more my kind of digi device.

The iPhone, still, I meet with a resounding "meh."

I'm not sure if that was a cough or me laughing up a lung. Could have been both.
