“Apple continues to gloss over the interface, refining it even more and there is an overly presence of black gloss.” eeeeeeek... GLOSS OVER? ... Yes, it's only a rumor, but i would expect Apple to make this giant pile of glossy waste even worse... <hitting my own head> ... omg, i'm pessimistic, please STOP me! Plus: Another sad example that a "look" is more interesting than functionality... <sigh> |

I'd take anything over what we have now. Aqua is total crap.
Illuminous is proof positive that Apple pooched the Mac OS interface. The fact that they were desperately searching for an interface designer (I would have applied, but I have a pretty good gig on the East Coast now). And perhaps they're finally going to be listening to pros. The problems with the interface right now are three: 1. It doesn't work. 2. It's counterintuitive c. It's fugly Somebody, some designer with a fucking clue has to step in and make the point that less is more. That yards of happy horseshit just CONFUSE an interface, where what you REALLY need to do is streamline it. With interfaces, more isn't better. Minimal is what's going to be timeless and perfect. |

brother ianj,
would you mind giving me a tour of your menubar--the icons to the left of the monitor icon? |

Sure. On the right side, going from left to right, there's Desktop Manager, a freeware virtual desktop implementation, eject, the input menu (the selected keyboard is Roman input for Kotoeri – I have a JIS keyboard), monitors, sound, clock, and of course, the applications menu (ASM) As the screenshot shows, I also went through the Finder's Menus.nib file and took out all the menu commands I have no use for – "New Finder Window" in File, and "Back" and "Forward" in Go. From what I've seen of the upcoming Spaces in 10.5, I think I might stick with Desktop Manager so I can keep the menu bar pager and less visual flash. I would have loved to keep running OS 9 on this machine, but for a number of reasons (no FLAC, USB 2.0 or Bittorrent among them) I had to let it go. It also doesn't help that Apple did something to keep a standard Mac OS 9.2 CD from installing to Summer 2003 Power Mac G4s (which I have), and the "Classic Support" install isn't nearly as stable as a normal install by my experience. |

Nicely done. I'd like to give Microsoft Word a good pruning like that. In OS X it is such an unstable beast (and I'm not just Microsoft-bashing) that I've finally switched to the fairly capable TextEdit that is built into OS X. When I'm in OS X, I also use a program called MenuMeters. It adds some useful things in the menubar. I like to know what kind of load is being put on my CPU, for example. That can help me to know if a program is doing what it should be doing, misbehaving, or whatever. MenuMeters has a lot of other features as well. |

Hum hum, this "glossing over" doesn't seem too groundbreaking...
http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a321/ nothing too exciting, but the addition of another UI-style - the dark theme. (... this are still rumors & betas of course) yawn, this unholy trend apple started in 10.0 is still unstoppable. |

Using Time Machine (is that like System Restore from Windows?) can I rewind to Platinum?
