From macfixit without further comment. Tip: Paste search strings We previously noted that one of the biggest user gripes with Mac OS X 10.4.x's Spotlight is a sometimes dramatic pause that occurs after typing one or two characters, as Spotlight begins searching immediately for all data containing those letters. MacFixIt reader Tracy Valleau offers a simple tip for avoiding this slow-down -- typing the search string in an open text field then copying and pasting the text into the Spotlight search field. Tracy writes: "To dramatically speed up Spotlight or Find, just paste the search term in, instead of typing it."

Well. sure! That would indeed speed up Spotlight a bit. Of course, it would slow down the process of finding a file. Instead of only having one thing for the user to do, type the file info, with this process there are at least three, type, copy, paste. Probably more than three because the user has to click between windows and sometimes OS X misses the "copy" command and you find there is nothing on the clipboard so you have to do it again. I guess anyone can play the OS X tip game, or as we in-the-know like to call it; The Even More Stuff for the User to Do Game. Here is a useful tip suggested by thalo.net reader, HighHopes. Tip by HighHopes You may be able to speed up Spotlight still further by first finding the file you are looking for manually and renaming it with a unique string of characters such as, "!@#$%^%---+++" then type the new file name into an open text field, copy, paste into Spotlight. If everything goes right, Spotlight may or may not find the file. Give it a try!

LOL!!!!!!! Brothers, do I need to say it? This is SO typical of OS X bullshit. Never do things the easy way. Always find the screwy complicated workaround. Never take the quickest path between point a and point b... always take the friggin' scenic route. A "tip" that adds ten steps. Greeaaaat. Open a text editor, or Stickies yadda yadda... type, copy, paste. All instead of thinking that maybe Spotlight would be better if it DIDN'T do the "instant search" thing. If you had to hit return or a button before it began. Please. OS 9 may have had some things wrong with it, it may have crashed. But know what? I don't EVER recall wasting so many clicks, and having so much trouble just getting the OS to do what it was supposed to do. I don't remember the interface WASTING MY TIME nearly as much as OS X does.

I'm certain you could write a Dashboard Widget for that ! Or do it using Automator ! :-)
