...because I can't begin to describe the unbelievable PIECE OF CRAP that system is when you put it under the slightest pressure...
I was forced to use that machine the whole day today (the same from an earlier thread) and I feel like I was trampled by a herd of buffaloes.
It's just undescribable how inneficient this system is even for those tasks it's supposed to be good at! “Windows Connectivity”. Sure. My ass. Trying to access the network via the Finder's “Connect to...” using samba and retrieve some image sequences resulted in folders displaying 0 items when they actually were full of targa files that were put there for me by another user. He ended up having to burn a DVD because OS X failed to do the simple basic job of connecting to a PC network and copying some files over. Something I do on a daily basis with my OS 9 Mac with my eyes closed.
And don't get me started on having to capture footage, do some basic editing and outputting to tape using Final Cut Pro HD because I still can't BELIEVE the kind of flaky amateur toy that piece of shit actually is. Seriously I can't believe what the hype is all about. FCP on a Dual G5 with the latest AJA I/O box can't even touch an old PC-based Avid. Perhaps I'm too used to see how discreet's Smoke works or whatever. It crashed on me so many times it's ridiculous and I wasn't even asking a lot from it because I don't know the software very well. God, the pop-up messages nagging me every time I needed to lay off to tape with no checkbox for “don't warn me again” almost killed me...
OS X even asked me for a “security password” every time I inserted a CD or DVD with the files I needed! What's up with that.
No, the time and productivity I lost today (and I'm pretty much an expert OS X user) are so hard to describe that, well...what I wrote in the title.

Are you sure your problems were not user error?

I feel your pain, brother mAx.

I've been saying for three years, that the second you lean on this crapware, it flips out. You end up having to do twice the work that you did in the legacy, just fighting the friggin' interface.

Casual users? Fine. They're chimps, so they can take it slow, they have time to giggle at every icon bounce, and marvel at stripey translucent menus. But a pro, whipping through key commands and having a grand total of zero patience for the time it takes the OS to catch up with them, is at a distinct disadvantage.

I've had to change my working style to accomodate the OS. When the non-dysfunctional way would have been exactly the opposite. The OS should be able to accomodate MY working style.

I refuse to become a chimp or a retard, to use an OS designed for chimps and retards. I'd rather have one designed for pro users. Which this most certainly, ain't. Is not. Is not.

Well guys, wish me luck as I move to Thailand. Most likely I'll be using Windows XP from now on, although I will personally try to use Macs/Mac OS X in parallel (I'm stubborn and kinda like it).

My friend/boss was a staunch Mac OS Niner and resolutely jumped ship to Windows, not willing to fight the ultimate battle. If you can't be Gandalf, you might as well be Saruman.

Brother mighty, godspeed. I hope this doesn't mean we won't be seeing you around here. Find a good isp over there and we'll be your taste of home Smile

And you can be our taste of thailand. I'd love some authentic recipes. And I live fairly close to a market with all the thai ingredients.

But have a great trip, and touch base when you get settled in.

Yeah, what, like that's HARD?

Being an expert OS X user is like being an expert Sesame Street or Teletubbies watcher. Or an expert Jar-Jar Binks language speaker. It's irritating, frenetic and distracting jive, but it ain't hard.

Meesa lika iTunza! Wooooooo! Appacashun suddenly QUIT? Mussa be Jar Jar fault!
