Let me know if you're cereal (serious), smithz.

Ok, i've slept over it and today it doesn't sound all good. I'm a geek, but i don't want to be the king of geeks, because that person won't have a social life anymore. :-) ... So, i'm staying senior bros until my status is reaching Overlord, Doctor Pixel or something...

3D has always been one of those fun gee-whiz things…and also one of those things good only in small doses. I've never experienced much of 3D where I wasn't soon getting eye fatigue.

I can absolutely agree with that, even as an avid 3D-Fan. Compared to traditional 2D Photography 3D needs everything exactly fitting, most consumers won't have the knowledge or time to fiddle around. If there is anything not perfectly aligned the headache will crawl up for sure.
And there is the hassle with viewers, so it's annoying compared to a simple print.
I'm hopeful that 3D is hard to come by, but someday it will be standard. Even with a headache afterwards i will look for the next 3D Experience, i'm addicted. Another example that may give you headache but is fun: 3D Quake

Remember those early 3D-ish holographic-like plastic laminated cards and such that were sort of slotted with vertical lines? You'd tilt the care a little to one side and you'd see one picture. You'd tilt it the other way and another picture would appear.

That's basically the technique Fuji will offer again, i think improved with todays technology. They want to set up a printing service for these special coated cards. But all in all it's that. Notice that the LCD of that Fuji-Camera also offers this special vertical-lens coating (i don't know the exact term), so the shots can be viewed in 3D (without headache? :-) right after shooting.

I remember the flux-compensator. Or was it the flux capacitor? Yeah, from Back to the Future.

Yes, that flux was built inside the time-machine delorean sportscar.

Smithz I liked playing Quake 3. That was a great first person shooter game. I never had a machine or internet connection fast enough to compete especially with all the cheats. I would never play to win but go after the people that would be tearing through the map killing every body. I liked the wide open maps because I would use the shotgun. I could hit them from anywhere. The closer I got the more damage. Games to 25 I would never have more than 10 kills but all my kills would be the winner. People would team up. They would send one guy around just to kill me.

I really liked capture the flag too.

Quake 3 really is a damn good game even after all these years. I've still got it on one of my PC's around here although it rarely gets played these days. But it still holds up. They keep adding bells and whistles to these first-person shooters, but they don't always do much to improve the game-play. Sometimes they just gum it up. And it's amazing how tight or optimized the code was for Quake 3. It would run pretty well on just a so-so system while Unreal Tournament (which I love), is a CPU hog of the highest caliber.

Lenticular is the formal name for those kinds of "ribbed for your pleasure" photos that show two (or more?) pictures depending on what angle you view it. Someone mentioned a lenticular business cards out-of-the-blue to me yesterday.

Is there any other brother out there who's an APERTURE 2 user? I'm having an issue where the program will suddenly and mysteriously (after working in it), start crashing on launch.

It feels like the same old same old. The more you use it, the more something degrades and breaks. But the way it breaks, is that when I try to launch the program, it bails. It gives me a dialog, do I want to relaunch, and when I go yes, it relaunches, and quits again. The only way out is to reinstall the app from scratch.

What could it be that's breaking?

Instead of reinstalling from scratch have you tried something simple like throwing out the plst file for Aperture?

BN that is exactly why I liked Quake 3 so much. It just ran so great even on my ancient G3 machine. It ran fantastic once I upgraded the CPU to 1Ghz.

Unreal Tournment was visually a great game to but it was just to slow. I could never really play it on line.

That is were Quake 3 excelled. It was a lot of fun playing on line. It was a real disappointment when they released Quake 4. It was nothing like Quake 3. It had become DOOM/Quake.

I have tried to install Quake 3 on my MDD machine without success. I am not sure what the problem is but it just will not launch once it is installed.

My character was the Sergent. My name was York. Very few players got it. Once somebody asked if I was a Jew. I guess they thought York meant New York.

You may know, there is an open-source Game called "Open Arena", which is basically the Quake-3-Engine (as ID Open-Sourced it) and some levels. It plays exactly like Quake3 and is updated quite often. The only things that are missing are of course the still-copyrighted levels/Graphics/sounds of Q3. Look here: openarena.ws

Err, i just checked the site and read that there are some legal problems. Stay tuned for 0.81 or ask me.

LMAO. And come to think of it, maybe it's about time they remade a movie based on his life. I haven't seen the movie with Gary Cooper in years, and I don't remember it as being that great of a movie. But maybe I should watch it again because it's the story of a somewhat pacifist turned into a war hero. Here's an interesting bit from someone's review of the movie:

quote:
The real Sergeant York eschewed all money making ventures that would have capitalized on his heroics in World War I and had resisted giving the rights to his story to Hollywood. He relented because in 1941 he became concerned with the danger fascism posed for the world and advocated preparedness. Part of what brought him out was the speechmaking of that other American hero Charles A. Lindbergh who was an appeasement advocate.

York even called the shots on who was to play him. So Jack Warner made a call to Adolph Zukor over at Paramount and probably paid one hefty sum for Gary Cooper's services. It was worth every penny of it as Cooper got his first Oscar for Best Actor.

Alvin York is a poor farmer supporting a widowed mother and a brother and sister. And he likes to cut loose every so often with a jug and a rifle. But he gets converted and gets involved in Walter Brennan's church which is a strict fundamentalist sort with pacifist tenets. When America gets into World War I, his very soul is tormented by the tenets of his church and the volunteer tradition of his state. Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State and that nickname is no lie. It bothers him more than other men because as Pastor Walter Brennan tells him he's "got the using kind of religion.

"

These people may be fundamentalists and somewhat backward, but they're not phonies. No high hog living preachers here, just simple people trying to get through life the best they can.

Brother Rico,

Yes, believe me, when I do something as drastic as a full reinstall, I've exhausted all the normal OS X options, like trashing the prefs and rebuilding permissions. Could it have something to do with my Aperture stuff being on a separate hard drive (on one of the ones in the enclosure, rather than the Raptor?)

No I don't think having the stuff on a separate drive should cause a problem.

Did you update to 10.5.5 yet. If not try downloading the combo update. Then reinstall Aperture.

Today, i got the info that my Ricoh R6 Camera can't be repaired ( ... imagine this, Ricoh has trouble getting enough spare parts and as a result they are unable to repair their stuff) ...
So, i got a refund and am now trying to decide which camera to buy next. Maybe the old R7 or something completely different. Oh, that's difficult - the big 7x zoom and time-lapse mode is something i wouldn't give away for anything.

I could wait for the new Samsung HZ1, but i don't know any specs about it - if there is a timelapse-mode - i have my doubts.

Hmm, the R7 is still the closest guess. It's pretty fair priced and does everything my old R6 does (and something more)...

The follow-up models R8 and R10 are bigger and bulkier and offer nothing extraordinary new besides 10mpix. I don't care much about mpix.

Grr, decisions. Tough one i have to sleep over it. But the upcoming recession makes me look at the R7, it's good value for money Smile

Smithz that is a bummer. It is to bad they didn't offer you the R7.

I will try to see if I can find the specs on the HZ1.

So they wrote you a check that you can spend on anything you want?

I really liked the time lapse mode on my old SD1000 and am disappointed the Canon 570 IS didn't have it. This is really stupid since all it would take is small teeny subroutine in the software to do this. Maybe your camera not being able to be repaired is a good news situation. Maybe you'll move onto something even better.

It's some kind of legal thing, they are not allowed to offer me the R7 directly because it's a different model. But my refund is more than the price of a brandnew R7. Smile

Agreed 100%. Some decisions in camera-biz seem so weird. Include some brilliant feature here, but leave it out on other models. Propably some marketing-led bullcrap. And of course never add anything big via firmware, even if it would be so easy. No, marketing said no.
Yes, i would like to move to something better. I just have to evaluate what piece of kit exactly.

Well that is good news at least. Does the battery fit in the R7 from the R6.

Identical. But i don't have any spare battery. Smile

BN, you know about the open-firmware hacking on Canon Cameras? They have all kinds of add-on features, including i think timelapse. Sorry, i don't have a link now. But i know it doesn't damage your camera, because the custom firmware is only loaded temporarely.

Very interesting, smithz. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the link, smithz. Wow. That looks way more complex than I want to screw with. Or maybe it's just that the web site is so poorly organized. Anyway, I'll keep that in mind for the future.
