Anyone notice that the interface of iTunes got tweaked? See the play button? Upscaled. Bigger target (Newbie friendly). Slightly shallower on the controls (less 3-Deviance), upped the contrast a bit, and put a nipple on the volume control. But now the stupid window widgets really pop. Before they appeared on a similar plane to the iTunes controls.

I really don't care, but this shows me that Apple IS willing to change the appearance of interface elements. Now all they have to do is simplify them and make them burn up as little screen real estate as possible. But what, were they BORED? They're just tweaking stuff that doesn't really matter, and refusing to tweak stuff that desperately does need some attention.

I always say to myself that almost everything these Aqua designers are doing graphically nowadays could have been done half the size or with half the BS. But the illusion of 3-D is so seductive. It's still more about eye candy than function, and they haven't yet found eye candy that actually contributes in some way to app use. I'm still waiting for things to look the way that's best for what they do, rather than "because it's cool." I hate the Mind Metal less than the striped nonsense, but I still like the Classic Mac Platinum a thousand times better.

Right now, we have two different interfaces, three if you count Classic. Striped Aqua, Aluminot Aqua, and Platinum. I'd love them to let us pick one. I'd go straight for Platinum in a heartbeat. I will always gravitate to the interface with the least nonsense.
