Hello Brotherhood,

i (to be more exact, 2 friend of mine who decided to use OS X only) just ran into a annoying problem. As i wrote in another thread we occasionally do netpaintings and discovered that it works (a bit) in classic too.
We use an ancient Metacreations (r.i.p.) Painter-Version (5.5 from 1996). It runs quite good in Classic. I personally use it in OS 9.22 and I'm connected WITHOUT a router.

First successful attempt:
Friend-A of mine uses some netgear-router. We discovered i need to try to establish a netpaint-connection (using painter) to 2 IPs. Not at the same time, but first IP1 (the IP of the DSL-Connection). Trying that i get an Error ("Problems at the other end"), right after that i connect to IP2 (IP-Adress of the machine connected to the router). Strange, but it works this way. If i try to connect directly to IP2 it fails ("Network join Failed")

This Friend has opened his firewall in the router for Port 2000 (It's the port Painter uses). The Firewall in OS X seems to do nothing to Painter in Classic, on or off, no difference.

Friend-B uses a router, too. But it fails completely there, perhaps due to router trouble. That's another story.

Most important, I don't understand the Friend-A situation and my knowledge about the TCP-IP background in classic is nearly zero.
Does anyone have a clue how a router affects the IP Adresses and the Classic Enviroment? Both have the latest Tiger installed.

I'm a *little* clueless. Roll Eyes

smithz do the two Tiger machines have problems connecting to one another? Can they connect to you but you can not connect to them?

Let me get this straight. Connecting to Friend-A you must go through the routine of connecting to the router address which fails then the address of Friend-A's machine for successful Net Painting. If you try connecting directly to the TCP/IP of the machine connection fails.

It sounds like Net Painting functions similar to how first person shooters games interact with one another.

smithz I did some sniffing around. It looks like Net Painter was present until Painter 7. Painter 7 works both in the Legacy and X. Not sure if Painter 7 works in Tiger.

Hi Rico, thanks, that's a good advice.

Yes, the Tiger machines hadn't one successful connect to one another. Only successful attempt was connecting Friend-A to my Mac.
I am still confused by the 2-step connection technique. It seems so wack to me. I would like to know what goes on there internally to find an easier way.

smithz for shits and gigles did you try having Friend-A and Friend-B connect directly to their modems bypassing the routers to see if a three way Net Painter session could be achieved.

I am not sure about the 2-step connection technique yet. I will have to dig a little more.

Well, a connection without router is working well with friend-A (connecting me). Friend-B hasn't control over the router and therefore can't directly use the DSL-Modem, so it's difficult there.

Thanks for your help in advance, I never give up. I'm just a little tired now... :-)

err, i just found out something (maybe) interesting:

Net Painter uses its own protocol based on User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Some firewalls may obstruct the transfer of Net Painter information. If you are working from within such a firewall, you may be unable to use Net Painter beyond the local area network. You should try it and see if the firewall causes any problems. (from the Painter Help)

So, i will kick both friends and make them free UDP on the routers, too. Btw, I tried to send you a link, but can't find any kind of pm-adress (even forum-only) of you here.

smithz it was hard finding any info on Net Painter. Corels site has literally no record of it.

Here is a short statement from a forum I found:

JinBrown said:

I always chuckle remembering the time I asked one of the original Painter developers a question and he said he didn't know a lot about that feature, then said he guessed I was the expert on this subject now. (He meant me, but he had to be joking!)

Yikes! If I was the expert on that subject, we were in big trouble.

(The feature was Net Painter which is no longer a part of Painter, with Painter 8's release.)

I knew enough to teach people how to use it and to have some really fun online collaborative painting sessions, but surely there must have been more I didn't know.

I was truly amazed to find the developer couldn't tell me more than I'd learned on my own.

Now you and your friends are the lone experts on Net Painer.

Jinny Brown has a website on Painter.

The Net Painter section is shut down but she might be worth the email for questions.

Rico, thanks again for this link. It seems this NetPaint-Mode was coded by some Alien who left Earth shortly after Painters release. :-)
