You might want to read about it from adobe. My laymans understanding of DNG is adobe's attempt to standard RAW digital camera files. Each manufacturer has their own proprietory RAW file format. Nikon Canon Olympus Imacon Kodak are all using different RAW capture file formats developed and or tweaked by each company for their cameras. Abobe is presenting DNG as a way to convert the different RAW files formats to one standard as a way to ensure down the road that you can open files in the future. The real reason Adobe probably put forth the DNG solution is because adobe has to keep upgrading the Camera Raw plugin for photoshop as new cameras come out they have to be added to the list of cameras photoshop can handle. DNG could make adobe's job easier. It could also bring in royalties if adobe could license the format to digital camera makers. I still don't see the benifits from using the DNG converter. At least not in the short term. |
