I was just getting a little misty for the days when there was actually Mac gaming to speak of. I was remembering some of my favorites, Prince of Persia, Dark Castle, does anybody remember

"Out of This World"? The animation was very simple and minimal, but it had an engrossing storyline, and was wonderfully playable.

What the heck happened to Mac games? Is there anything worth playing anymore? The only thing I like on the Mac right now is the Asteroids friggin' WIDGET. Old school. It's the only game I find the slightest bit playable. I tire quickly of the various flavors of solitaire. And almost every super-rendered arcade game ever made for the Mac strikes me as so choked with eye candy it doesn't play right.

Some of the old Mac games were primitive, but broke all kinds of new ground. "Pathways into Darkness" was the granddaddy of Doom and all that, and did so much with so little. Now, there's all the processing power in the world, wonderfully rendered graphics. And the games are boring. Either they don't involve the player enough, or they go so over the top with visual superabundance and multiplicity of controls, that you have to be an FA-18 pilot to play them.

What are some of your favorite games on the Mac, past and present?

The last game for the Mac I remember really enjoying and staying up late playing, was Marathon. After that, I simply lost interest.

On the PC, only Unreal Tournament has been any fun for me whatsoever. On the Mac, gameplay sucked. Jumpy and slow.

I never had MacGolf, but I remember MacBilliards, that was kind of fun for an hour.

My favorites were always the POV storyline type arcade games. There were a few for the black-and-white 9" Mac Screen that I remember fondly, but don't recall the titles. They were sort of ghost stories, supernatural/thriller type games.

I remember liking Patriot Command. There was a pretty good Joust port. The best asteroids clone I thought was Maelstrom. Still plays in Classic.

I never had MacGolf,

I went through a spate of playing MacGolf and actually got pretty good at it – something I was never to achieve outside of a video game. Most of my gaming was done on the Atari 800 and later the 800xl. Klondike is a classic. No doubt that game alone is responsible for millions of dollars of lost employee time. Wink After the first gaming boom bust (which lead to the demise of Atari and later the rise of Nintendo), I pretty much stayed out a gaming for a while. None of the Donkey Kong clones appealed to me, just like none of today's Mario "jump and whack things" clones appeals to me, although, god, what amazing and clever things those game designers are doing these days. I watch some of the stuff my nephew plays and I'm just blown away by the creativity and cleverness. Still, those games aren't my cup of tea. It wasn't until Unreal, and later, Unreal Tournament came around when I went "Wow…now this is something cool and different."

The best asteroids clone I thought was Maelstrom.

Yes, I forgot about Maelstrom. That is truly one of the great Mac games, as is Classic Cribbage which I still play in Classic (OS 9).

Classic Gin Rummy

Yes, indeed, Markle. Good game. I was probably a so-so gin player until I started playing this game. The computer opponents can really improve one's game. Freeverse's CrossCards and X-Words are also absolutely first-rate games.

I'm using emulators for playing games. Face it, games have always been best on gaming concoles !

So i'm running a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) emulator to play Ice hockey, a SNES emulator to play Mario cart, a Turbografx emulator to play tennis, a Sega master system emulator to run RPG'S.

Huge fun.

You obviously haven't been playing World Of Warcraft! I've been glued to it nearly a year now! Big Grin

Brother Seal did you ever work out your wireless problem? Or did you just run a long ethernet cable down to the pub.

Hail Brother RicoX!

I had forgotton all about that. *slaps head*

What I did was purchse a QuickerTek 27db Transceiver for my extreme base station.

The unit comes with a small base attached by a cable to the airport extreme's external antenna port. You then carefully screw the transceiver onto the base. Which I did. Yet, it couldnt make a connection properly. So after playing with it a bit to get it to properly make a connection the cheaply soldiered connector promptly broke off from the transceiver! *sigh*

Not living it the US it would have been a timely and costly endevour to return the broken unit for repair. (Even if they would have repaired it. Im sure I would have been told "You broke it assembling it, too bad.")

Anyhow, the pub a few months ago eventually heard the calls of modernization and went DSL. I donated a linksys wireless router to them and now all is "pretty good".

Now I have a new dilemma. The linksys is connected to the DSL upstairs in an office. So the single is very weak. What Id like to be able to do is configure my airport express to act as a relay station connected wirelessly to the linksys. Ive done this at home between an express and an extreme base station without too much trouble but Im just not getting that same sort of setup to work between the express and the linksys. :/ It contintously tells me the configuration of the main base station couldnt be read and would have to be setup manually. No further clue what to do after that or if its even possible.

So Ill keep playing with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated though!

Brother Seal Linksys also has this device.

Or cant you just have the proprietor move the modem & router into the bar area? Or move just the router by using a longer ethernet cable to connect it to the modem.

No... brother Seal... never touched "World of Warcraft". I'll have to check it out. It always looked a bit "dungeons and dragonsy" to me.

I'm much more an "Unreal Tournament" kind of fan. Pick up the weapon and wade in. Don't want to have to negotiate with enchanted scrolls or trade magic beans or cast spells. Just pow pow splat splash thud.

Not sure in that case how much you would enjoy WoW. I know its like crack for me. It does however have a bit of everything which makes it appealing to a large population. The game currently has (according to Blizzard) around 6.5 million subscribers.

What makes it appealing to so many is that you can choose to quest around solo in many cases, or join a group and dungeon crawl if thats your thing, or level up a character a ways and hit the battlegrounds which is more action paced. The game is much more "Diablo" (if you are familliar with that) then it is "Dungeons and Dragons".

Anyhow, if you should get into the game any or if anyone else on the forums already is roll a character on the scarlet crusade server and send a message to "Blackseal" or "Bermy"!
